Contrebasse (Double Bass)
Nazaret Kiourtchian, double bass player with the Córdoba Orchestra, started studying the violin at the age of six, and later studied double bass at the Yerevan Conservatoire (Armenia), under Professor V. Terzian. He furthered his double bass studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire under Professor B. Kozlov, and later achieved a distinction in examinations at the Ecole Normale in Paris, where he was taught by Professor Felipe Canales. His musical training was also decisively influenced by Professor E. Kolosov at the Moscow Conservatoire and the Berlin Hochschule, and Professor Mikhail Milman, principal cellist with the Moscow Virtuosi and currently first violin with the Córdoba Orchestra.
At the age of 16, he was awarded the second prize for double bass at the Transcaucasus Competition (1985). In 1988 he obtained a Diploma of Honour at the National Soviet Union Competition. In 1990, he was awarded the Diploma of Honour at the Geneva Competition. In 1991, he won the First Prize at the Murcia International Young Musicians’ Competition.
He has played with a number of orchestras, including the Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Conservatoire, the Málaga Orchestra, the Murcia Symphony Orchestra and the Valencia Orchestra. He has also performed as a soloist and has been a member of several chamber groups.
