Parisian born Etienne Tavitian began to play the violin before he eventually switched to the warmer sound of the viola. In 1993 he got into the Paris Conservatoire in Jean Sulem’s class, where he obtained a First Prize. He took part in masterclasses with renowned teacher such as Walter Levine, Fjodor Drujinin, Shlomo Mintz or Veronika Hagen. From 1995 to 1997 he was a member of the Gustav Mahler JugendOrchester and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and played throughout Europe under the baton of Claudio Abbado or Bernard Haitink. He is a real chamber music lover, which he
plays notably in the Giverny Festival with great artists such as Joseph Silverstein, Atar Arad, Gil Sharon or Michel Strauss. He was a founder member of the Quatuor Baudelaire. He joined the Paris Opera Orchestra in 1997. He is also a regular guest of the Orchestre d’Auvergne as a solo viola.
